Asian foods are another one of our specialties here at Berkeley Bowl.
We feature a particularly strong selection of Japanese products as well
as a wide range of Chinese and Thai items. Here you'll discover new and
unique foods, but also many things that are both handy and familiar. So
whether you’re experimenting with a new recipe or cooking up your
favorite dish, we have everything you need to give it the authentic taste
you desire.
Many traditional Asian diets are largely plant based and dairy free. It
is believed that this diet contributes significantly to the prevention
of many chronic diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain
cancers. Asian cuisine not only represents a healthy diet in general,
but is responsible for many delicious soy and wheat based meat alternatives
such as tofu, tempeh, and seitan. Such savory dishes are a source of delight
to both vegetarians and meat lovers alike. Although we now typically recognize
these foods in the grocery store and on our dinner plates, they are still
relatively recent additions to our culinary lexicon. That means many of
us are still just beginning to discover the incredible potential and diversity
that this cuisine presents.

Frozen edamame and potstickers can be found on Aisle 7. Rice is located
in the front of the store, adjacent to customer service. Tofu, miso, tempeh,
fishcakes, and kim chee can be found in the two refrigerated cases at
both the end of Aisle 1 and 2 and Aisle 2 and 3 (both are just across
from the seafood counter). Don't forget we carry over six brands of tofu—from
hand-made San Jose tofu to Wild Wood's organic tofu, all in various styles
and sizes. Our sake selection includes domestic and imported brands as
well as premium microbrewed jizake. Sake is all located with the wine
(in between the meat counter and the dairy department).
Overall, our Asian section encompasses an incredible range including many
products you simply cannot find anywhere else outside of the specialty
markets located in Oakland’s Chinatown or San Francisco’s
Japantown.
