MEAT & SEAFOOD CLERK

Reports to

Meat and Seafood Supervisor and Department Manager.

Purpose

To provide prompt, friendly, knowledgeable customer service in a fast-paced meat and seafood department.

Responsibilities

  • Assist customers in-store or over the phone in a prompt, friendly, and courteous manner. 

  • Offer suggestions and ideas of how to prepare and use the products. 

  • Be able to answer questions regarding product as well as an overall familiarity with the store. 

  • Performs basic cutting of meat and seafood as well as cleaning of products such as scaling whole fish or removing the skins of filleted fish. 

  • Ability to operate and maintain scales and follow procedures to ensure proper pricing. 

  • Take special orders for customers. 

  • Report customer suggestions, comments, and complaints to Meat Department Manager. 

  • Maintain attractive, fully stocked displays and cases within the department. 

  • Construct trays of meat, fish, and shellfish. 

  • Accurately label and sign items by price, description, and country of origin. 

  • Package Bulk meat and seafood items for retail sale. 

  • Must have the ability to work quickly, efficiently, and safely, and maintain proper food safety standards. 

  • Maintains meat and seafood department and keeps the area clean and free from hazards. 

  • Follow city and county food safety and sanitation regulations. 

  • Follow established guidelines for use, safety, and maintenance for all department equipment including knives, grinders, and saws. 

  • Maintains all coolers, freezers, and storage areas in a neat, clean, sanitary, and safe condition. 

  • Keep POS full and up to date. 

  • Receive as needed: Check deliveries for product dates and damage, quality, and accuracy, notify Department Manager of discrepancies. 

  • Rotate deliveries into storage. 

  • Organize and participate in inventory counts. 

  • Maintain shrinkage and inventory records. 

  • Pull low-quality items, record, and dispose of them following established procedures. 

  • Carry out opening and closing procedures. 

  • Stock for next shift.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Basic math skills required. 

  • Able to communicate in written and spoken English. 

  • Possesses the ability to identify basic cuts of meat and types of finfish and shellfish by species is preferred. 

  • Familiarity with cooking techniques is preferred. 

  • Able to handle multiple demands in a fast-paced setting. 

  • Customer Service experience is preferred. 

  • Experience with using power equipment (saw, grinder, tenderizer, etc.) preferred. 

  • Familiarity with natural food, nutrition, and food sensitivities helpful.

Education & Training

High School Diploma or GED preferred.

Licenses & Certifications

Other

  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs. 

  • Able to stand for extended periods of time. 

  • Manual dexterity with hazardous equipment. 

  • Must be 18 years of age to operate equipment. 

  • Willingness to work with meat and seafood. 

  • Willingness to work in a cold and wet environment. 

  • Willingness to work with sanitizers and cleaners. 

  • Flexible schedule preferred.

Pay Range

$19.61 - $29.50 per hour
